In our current climate crisis, the heat is on for doing the most good in the least amount of time.
Staring at a problem as enormous as global temperatures rising has the weight to flatten our spirit. It looks to big. What can we possibly do to change our fate?
When it comes to climate change, we have to start in our own backyard: Speak up against deforestation in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Here’s our checklist for taking action NOW:
- Sign the petition for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on behalf of the National Forest of Santa Fe.
At the time of this writing, an EIS has not been planned! An Environmental Assessment (EA) is not adequate to evaluate the consequences of deforestation in Santa Fe on our changing climate.
- Call James Melonas, Forest Supervisor, Santa Fe National Forest, 505-438-5300 and e-mail him email@example.com.
Please, respectfully ask Mr. Melonas to amend his decision for a 30 day comment period to a 90-day comment period on the current Scoping document. Also request an EIS for a project of this enormity. Without these requests fulfilled, the pubic will be left out of the discussion.
Tree Hugger Santa Fe has gathered valuable information and updated science speaking to why deforestation in Santa Fe in the name of fire safety will have the opposite effect. We want to work together with the Forest Service to create smart programs for protecting homes from wildfire as well as future generations from struggling in a climate with too few trees to survive.
Share the information you learn from our website with anyone and everyone. Even out-of-state folks are helping out as these are Federal public lands belonging to the entire country.
- Attend the public Santa Fe Forest Service meetings.
- Hike with us to see the current deforestation in Santa Fe for yourself.
The “managed prescriptions” on the ground now will be similar, if not exactly, like the proposed burns currently planned. The schedule for the latest walks will be posted on our Facebook page. We plan to host a hike through “managed” sites in the forest 2-3 Sundays per month.
- Donate some cash to support the dedicated individuals working on behalf of the forest with Tree Hugger Santa Fe.
Your donations help support the work of the website and Facebook assistant. We’re also hopeful to bring one of the country’s foremost scientists to Santa Fe to speak on behalf of the forest to the Forest Service management authorities.
- Like our Tree Hugger Santa Fe Facebook page and share our posts!
Spread the word! We are here! And we’re devoted to banding together to build a bridge of cooperation with the Forest Service to save the forest and protect our homes.
